Prof. Frank van Haren

Director

Professor Frank van Haren is the Director of the Intensive Care at the St George Hospital, Professor at the Australian National University, Conjoint Professor at the University of New South Wales, Adjunct Professor at the University of Canberra and honorary Professorial Fellow at the George Institute for Global Health.

He is an established international leader and expert in clinical and translational research in intensive care. He has published more than 150 articles and book chapters and given more than 160 invited presentations at international conferences. He also has significant experience in policy development for and providing advice to governments, both in developed and in developing countries.

Dr. Maz Razavian

Deputy Director

Dr. Maz Razavian is the Deputy Director of St George ICU. His subspecialty interests include cardiac intensive care and echocardiography, as well as clinical governance and service development with a portfolio that includes designing and commissioning new ICUs. He is an information technology enthusiast and dreams of integrating AI into the “Swiss cheese” Model.

Dr. Manoj Saxena

Director of Research

Dr. Manoj Saxena is a Senior Physician in Acute General and Intensive Care Medicine.  Manoj has been an Examiner for the College of Intensive Care Medicine, and currently is the Director of Research in the Department of Intensive Care Medicine; he also provides high level oversight of the Clinical Governance program.

He is a Senior Lecturer with the Division of Critical Care at the George Institute for Global Health (University of New South Wales) and is the current Chair of the Australia and New Zealand Intensive Care Society Clinical Trials Group (ANZICS CTG).  He has received just under AUS $10 Million in peer reviewed funding and has published over 90 peer reviewed scientific manuscripts.  Manoj’s personal research area of interest has been on the role of thermoregulation for acute brain injury, as well as acute inflammation and infection. 

Manoj has also benefited enormously from working collaboratively with international academics in North America, New Zealand, Europe and Scandinavia. 

 

A/Prof. Swapnil Pawar

Staff Specialist

A/Prof Swapnil Pawar is a staff specialist in Intensive care medicine at St George Hospital and associate professor of Critical Care medicine at University of New South Wales (UNSW).

He has previously served as chair of the Australia and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS) education committee. He is the recipient of prestigious Ramesh Nagappan Award 2023, given by ANZICS. His teaching philosophy is framed by the belief that all learners can achieve a lifelong love for learning when they are encouraged to recognise the connection between medical education, healthcare delivery and patient safety.

He is the host and producer of six educational podcast series and runs his educational website Critical Care Education. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in the field of cognitive load theory. He is a trained Negotiator and enjoys supporting young talent as a captain of St George district cricket club metro team.

Dr. Behny Samadi

Staff Specialist

After completing intensive care training at St Vincent’s & RPA hospitals in Sydney and attaining FCICM, Dr. Behny Samadi completed an overseas fellowship with an emphasis on ECMO and echocardiography at Vancouver General Hospital in Canada, affiliated with the University of British Columbia. She then consolidated her echocardiography expertise and independent practice as a consultant at Nepean Hospital and served as the Donation Medical Specialist before moving to St George Hospital to re-establish the ICU Echocardiography and ECMO programs.

She developed a passion for welfare after reflecting on her own difficulties throughout training and as a junior consultant and is the unit’s CICM Welfare Advocate. She is also an avid educator, creating and convening the CICM and ASUM accredited Introductory Echo Course, as well as serving as regular faculty on BASIC, and is an Conjoint Lecturer for the University of NSW.

Her greatest achievements have been her beautiful children born during the pandemic, and being awarded the Staff Member of the Month award in ICU for making the new JMOs feel welcome.  

Dr. Anne-Marie Welsh

Staff Specialist

Dr. Anne-Marie Welsh completed her undergraduate training in the UK, between St Andrews in Scotland and Manchester in England. After emigrating to Australia in 2006, she completed her intensive care training in QLD and WA and has practiced as an intensive care specialist since 2010.

Dr. Welsh has a passion for trainee education and welfare. She is currently a supervisor of training, donation medical specialist and new examiner for the CICM second part clinical examination. Her other passion is echocardiography; having completed two echo fellowships and attaining several post graduate qualifications in echo, including the DDU Critical Care. She is regular faculty on several courses including St George Introductory Echo, RACEplus, BASIC and Beyond BASIC mechanical Ventilation. She has a reputation for being compassionate and is a sort after mentor for intensive care trainees. When not at work, she is busy as a single parent to 3 children.

Dr. Asako Ito

Staff Specialist

Dr. Asako Ito is a senior staff specialist at St George Hospital ICU. Dr. Ito originally trained as an emergency physician in Japan, then made the transition to intensive care medicine. In addition to obtaining her intensive care specialty qualifications in Australia, Dr. Ito has completed a Diploma in Clinical Education, patient safety training at the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) and simulation training at the Harvard Centre for Medical Simulation.

Dr. Ito enjoys the roles of quality & safety, and supervisor of training, and values supporting the next generation of doctors who will become the future of intensive care medicine. She gets immense satisfaction from great teamwork whilst looking after critically ill patients. This includes deep and rewarding connections with families and patients in difficult times.

Prof. John Myburgh AO

Staff Specialist

Professor John A Myburgh AO, is a Professor of Intensive Care Medicine, University of New South Wales, Sydney; Director of the Critical Care Program and Professoriate at the George Institute for Global Health – where he is currently seconded -, Senior Intensive Care Physician at the St George Hospital, Sydney and Leadership Fellow from the National Health and Medical Research Council.

He is an internationally recognised clinician-researcher and completed a PhD in catecholamine neurophysiology and pharmacology in 2002 and and has led the development and co-ordination of over 60 clinical trials in Intensive Care Medicine.

He is a Foundation Member and Past-Chairman of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society Clinical Trials Group. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Research Centre and the Division of Critical Care and Trauma at the George Institute for Global Health in 2006.

He was instrumental in establishing the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand, serving as the first elected President from 2010-2012. He served on the Council of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine for six years and as Secretary-General from 2017-2019.

Clare Loveday

Nurse Manager

Clare Loveday is the Intensive Care Nurse Manager, a role that she has held for 10 years. The nurse manager is the line manager for over 200 intensive care nursing staff and is responsible for the operational and strategic direction of the ICU.

Over Clare’s 40-year nursing career she has undertaken a wide variety of roles including CNE, NE, NUM and Nurse Manager as well as A/ Nursing Co-Director Critical Care with the majority of those roles in the intensive care setting. Clare’s qualifications include RN, Grad Cert Critical Care, Masters in Adult Education and Grad Cert Health Leadership & Management.

Clare went into the nursing profession with a passion for wanting to make a difference in people’s lives at a time when they are most vulnerable. As the Nurse Manager, Clare is passionate about supporting her staff to reach their full potential and being able to provide world class evidence-based care for the patients. She has a keen interest in staff wellbeing and being able to inspire the next generation of nurses to embrace critical care nursing as a great career.

Rachel Stocker

NUM2

Rachel works in the role of NUM2. Her qualifications include BNursing, Grad Dip Critical Care, Grad Dip Clinical Leadership.

Rachel holds the portfolios of NS2 Partnering with Consumers and NS3 Infection Prevention & Education. She is an active member of STGH Infection Control Committee. She plays a key role in roster development and maintenance, and is currently training as a Disability Inclusion Officer

Rachel is passionate about advocacy for patients and staff.

Kate Powell

NUM2

Kate works in the role of NUM2. Her qualifications include BNursing, Masters in Critical Care Nursing Intensive Care, and Graduate Certificate in Clinical Leadership.

Kate has 25 years working within ICU, with the last 15 years in Management including positions as ICU NUM, A/Nurse Manager ICU & A/Critical Care Nursing Co-Director

Emma Farley

A/NUM2

Emma works in the role of A/NUM2. Her qualifications include Bachelor of Nursing, post graduate certificate in critical care (ICU stream) and is currently studying a post graduate certificate in health services management. Emma has worked in intensive care for nearly 10 years and has acted in a variety of roles including: clinical nurse consultant, NUM 1 and nurse manager of assets and procurement and was a member of the future NUMS program in 2022.

Emma’s portfolios are NS4 medication safety and NS5 comprehensive care.

Outside of work, Emma loves to travel, her favourite destination is Hawaii and she is a diehard Cronulla Sharks fan.

Tracey Millie

NUM2 Assets & Procurement

Tracey has worked in ICU for a long time in a variety of roles.

She is currently the NUM for Assets and Procurement.

Her qualifications include B Nursing, Grad Cert ICU Nursing, Masters in Nursing Clinical Leadership.

She is passionate about environmental sustainability and is very supportive of new ideas.

 

 

Phillip Mackay

NUM1

Phillip has been an Intensive Care Nurse for over 32 years, as a Registered Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist, A/NUM2, A/Nurse Manager 4 and in his current role for the past 12 years as NUM1. Phillip’s qualifications include RN, Graduate Certificate in Intensive Care and a Graduate Diploma in Management & Leadership 

The NUM1 role includes leading, directing and coordinating patient care, patient flow and staffing allocation within the Intensive Care service. The role has 2 main aspects – essentially the Patient Flow Manager for the Intensive Care coordinating admissions and discharges for the unit within all areas of the hospital as well as inter hospital transfers and trauma retrievals and Staff Manager – ensuring staffing levels are maintained and the allocation of staff within the unit for safe patient care.

Phillip enjoys providing support for all staff within the ICU.

Phillip believes that teamwork is the most important aspect for success within the ICU. Being in a role that maintains and encourages this cohesive bond between all modalities, to work as a team, is what he is passionate about. 

Ann Murphy

NUM1

Ann is a member of the leadership team as a NUM 1. This is a fast-paced dynamic role which is at the heart of the unit, to lead, direct and coordinate patient care, patient flow and staffing allocations across four pods.

Ann’s qualifications include a Bachelor of Nursing and a Graduate certificate in Critical Care Nursing through the College of Nursing.

Steering a family through an admission into ICU is what Ann is passionate about. Not many people plan to have to visit ICU so ensuring that they receive the highest standard of care and support, to gain the best outcome is always a priority.

Ann is forever learning to tap dance and is always happy to have a chat about orchids and listen to or share a few tips.

Sarah Orr

NUM1

Sarah is a Clinical Nurse Unit Manager in our Intensive Care Unit, having a career spanning over 23 years within the critical care setting. She joined the Intensive Care Team as a New Graduate Nurse in 2000, and soon after completed her Graduate Certificate in Intensive Care Nursing. She gained her Clinical Nurse Specialist Qualification in 2003 and functioned as a CNS within the unit providing expert and compassionate care to her patients as well as supporting her fellow colleagues. Sarah undertook relief roles of CNE and acting Nurse Unit Manager before becoming a permanent Clinical Nurse Unit Manager in 2018.

As a Clinical Nurse Unit Manager, Sarah is committed to providing compassionate care to our patients and their families. Sarah is an advocate for safe and timely health care and strives to ensure our patient’s experience is as smooth as possible.

Outside of work Sarah loves spending time with family and friends.

 

Amanda Walker

NUM1

Amanda Walker works as one of the team of ICU NUM1s.

 

Elena Clark

NUM1

El works in the role of ICU NUM1. Her qualifications include Bachelor of Medical Science (UTS), Bachelor of Business (UTS). Masters of Nursing (USyd), graduate certificate in critical care; ICU (ACN). 

El’s role entails ensuring the safe and efficient coordination of patient flow within the ICU as well as shift to shift management of nursing staffing within the ICU. 

El is passionate about providing safe patient centered care to critically ill patients their families and carers whilst being in the ICU. As well as being able to act as a role model for staff within the ICU

When not at work, El enjoys being outside in nature, doing yoga and spending time with her family. 

Julie Beeson

ICU Liaison CNS2

Julie is an experienced ICU nurse who works within as the ICU Liaison CNS. The ICU Liaison portfolio includes ICU outreach, ICU discharge planning with the aim to reduce / prevent ICU readmissions.

Julie is passionate about advocating for ICU patients and works hard to ensure patients and their families have a voice within their hospital stay. Julie has extensive experience in rapid response and enjoys the team approach within SGH ICU.

Ben Hopkins

ICU Liaison CNS2

Ben is one of the ICU Liaison Clinical Nurse Specialist 2s in ICU

His qualifications include Bachelor of Nursing (UOW) and Graduate Certificate in Intensive Care Nursing (USYD)  

The ICU Liaison team are responsible for the co-ordination and facilitation of appropriate discharges to the ward environment. They are also responsible for attending hospital wide clinical deterioration as part of the ICU Outreach team.  

Ben has a strong passion for education and learning. He is also very passionate about advocating for patient safety and always aims to work collaboratively with a wide variety of the multi-disciplinary team to achieve best patient outcomes.  

On his days off Ben enjoys playing golf, cooking, and spending quality time with family and friends. 

 

Ben Wood

Clinical Nurse Consultant

Ben is a critical care professional with over 20 years of ICU experience who is committed to ensuring the highest standards of patient safety and best practice. Ben was proudly awarded Nurse of the Year at SGH and Excellence in Clinical Practice at SGH in 2020, which reflects his dedication to delivering exceptional care to patients and their families.

Ben’s qualifications include a Bachelor of Nursing, Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education, and a Masters of Nursing in Critical Care. Ben is an ARC ALS facilitator and a BASIC for Nurses facilitator and thrives on educating, supporting and mentoring other healthcare professionals.

Ben has a passion for education and simulation and has simulation qualifications from the Harvard Centre for Medical Simulation. Ben strives to work collaboratively within the ICU multidisciplinary education team to provide a supportive learning environment where staff are encouraged to learn from each other to provide the best possible care to our patients.

Outside of work, Ben is kept busy by his three kids and is a total fitness fanatic! Ben leads the “ICU STRIDORS” Run club and is a valuable member of the ICU mixed netball team.

Sarah Jones

Clinical Nurse Consultant

Sarah is an ICU Clinical Nurse Consultant who leads clinical service and consultancy in the ICU through the development, and implementation of clinical practice at state and at local level using best evidence as well as evidence from practice.

Sarah is passionate about practice development, quality improvement, and clinical redesign methodology ensuring a person-centered approach in care and delivery. Within Sarah’s work she strives for patient care continuity to ensure quality care is provided for all ICU patients.

Sarah’s qualifications include Certificate Course in Intensive Care Nursing, Graduate Diploma in Nursing (Nurse Educator). Sarah is an accredited ARC ALS Instructor, BASIC for Nurses Instructor, and accredited NSW Health Facilitation Development “Blue Band”.

Sarah has a keen interest in research and best practice and has recently published 2 papers related to basic nursing care, pressure area care in the critically ill.

Outside of work Sarah has an artistic flair and enjoys portrait drawing. She is also member of a community gym and is known to deadlift her own weight and plus some!

 

Rachel Morland

Nurse Educator

Rachel is an experienced ICU Nurse Educator who holds a Bachelor of Nursing, Graduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing and a Masters in Nursing (Education).

Rachel values compassion and empathy in patient care delivery and thrives in a collaborative team environment. Rachel has a keen interest in ECMO and cardiothoracic nursing and enjoys educating and supporting the ICU MDT.

Rachel is passionate about quality improvement and is the current lead in SGH ICU’s Cardiothoracic Interest Group.

Outside of work you will find Rachel at the beach indulging in her passion – surfing. She loves exercising, running, and cooking and spending time with her family and friends.

 

Virginia Decker

Nurse Educator

Virginia is an accomplished critical care nurse with over 30 years of experience. She holds a Bachelor of Nursing (Dis.) from the University of Sydney, Grad. Cert. in Critical Care and Certificate IV in training and assessment.

Virginia is dedicated to ensuring education leads to the provision of safe, exceptional care to critically ill patients and has made significant contributions to the field. She was a member of the state working party for designing the eRIC computer information system and assisted in implementing the DETECT program. Virginia actively shares her knowledge through presentations at conferences within Australia and overseas and has been the co-author of numerous publications.

Her passion is providing patient /family centred end-of-life care in the ICU.

Outside of work, she enjoys traveling, water activities and gardening.

Caitlyn Gray

Shanti Bhandari

Clinical Nurse Educator

Shanti is an experienced clinical nurse educator, with over 15 years of experience in critical care nursing. Shanti holds a Bachelor of Nursing, a Graduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing and a Masters in Cardiovascular Nursing. 

Shanti is a passionate and empathetic individual who values open communication in her role as a clinical nurse educator. She believes in a kind and compassionate approach towards motivating others for their own professional development. 

As a CNE, Shanti is primarily responsible for the education, supervision and support of nursing staff. In addition to her passion for cardio-thoracic nursing, she is also an active member of the cardio-thoracic interest group where she enjoys delivering high quality education.

Brittany Donohue

Clinical Nurse Educator

Brittany is a Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) in the ICU. She has a post graduate certificate in Intensive Care Nursing and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

Brittany is primarily responsible for the education, supervision and support of staff in the clinical environment. She is passionate about providing education to new and existing staff, particularly in the management of the deteriorating patient. Brittany also shares her knowledge and enthusiasm as a university tutor, supporting our future nurses in their early education.

Beyond her career Brittany is a fitness enthusiast and enjoys spending time with her fiancé, son and mischievous puppy.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Chloe Grigg

Clinical Nurse Educator

Chloe is one of the Clinical Nurse Educators in ICU. Her qualifications include Bachelor in Health Science and Master of Nursing as well as Master’s in Advanced Nursing (Clinical Education/Critical Care)

As a CNE, Chloe is primarily responsible for the education, supervision and support of staff in the clinical environment. Chloe is passionate about developing the skills and clinical knowledge of our staff. She recognises the importance of a skilled workforce in delivering excellent patient care.

In addition to her focus on education and professional development, Chloe is passionate about the wellbeing of her fellow healthcare professionals. Chloe values the importance of debriefing post critical events, and regularly facilitates these conversations.

In her spare time Chloe loves to cook, read and listening to podcasts. She enjoys being active by going to the gym and walking her Whippet puppy. 

 

Nicole Carney

A/Clinical Nurse Educator

Nicole is a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Intensive Care and has worked in both the acting Nurse Educator (NE) and acting Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) roles.

Nicole holds a Master’s degree in Advanced Nursing specialising in Clinical Education and Critical Care.

In the NE role, Nicole’s specialised training in clinical education enables her to design and implement educational workshops that enhance the knowledge and skills of nursing staff, fostering professional growth and excellence in patient care. Nicole follows staff through their transition into ICU. She understands the challenges and uncertainties that come with this journey and is committed to providing guidance, encouragement, and resources to help them thrive.

Outside of work, Nicole has interests in cooking, CrossFit, good coffee, and spending time with her dog, Louis.

 

Adiba Kabir

Secretary to ICU Director & Deputy Director

Adiba Kabir is the Secretary to ICU Director & Deputy Director at the St George Hospital. She also handles the administrative tasks associated with the organisation of both Junior and Senior ICU doctors and is supervisor to the medical secretaries. Adiba has a passion for administration and IT, with a Master’s degree in Cybersecurity, leveraging her extensive experience and knowledge in these fields. She has honed her skills in communication, organization, and technology, allowing her to excel in various administrative roles. She thrives in dynamic environments and is adept at handling complex projects, implementing strategic plans, and ensuring the smooth operation of ICU systems.

Beyond her professional pursuits, Adiba has a strong interest in staying up to date with the latest advancements in cybersecurity and technology. She actively seeks opportunities to expand her knowledge and skillset to remain at the forefront of industry trends. In her free time, she enjoys exploring new technologies, reading, and engaging in outdoor activities to maintain a balanced lifestyle.

 

 

 

Melissa Walker

Nursing Clinical Support Officer

Mel is the Clinical Support Officer for the nursing staff in ICU.  Her qualifications include a Bachelor of Applied Science (Food & Nutrition), Cert IV in Quality Management and Assurance, as well as Cert III and Cert IV in Health Administration.  She has extensive experience in both the public and private sectors and is a qualified barista courtesy of 20+ years in the coffee industry prior to commencing in public health.

As a CSO, Mel’s role is to provide a variety of administrational support for the nursing managers.  She is a whiz with spreadsheets and has transformed numerous arduous ICU processes from clunky to funky.  She is also the proud Editor in Chief of the ICU monthly newsletter, “Hot off the Precedex”

Mel is passionate about mental health and is a certified Mental Health First Aider.  She is a champion for positive health and wellbeing, in and out of the workplace. 

Outside of work, Mel is an avid (if not particularly skilled) soccer player and can often be found channelling her inner Sam Kerr on a futsal or football pitch.  She also enjoys travelling, renovating and retail therapy.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Wendy Chaseling

Senior Physiotherapist

Wendy is one of the most Senior Physiotherapists in ICU.  She worked at RPAH as a New Graduate Physiotherapist and again as a Senior Physiotherapist in the Respiratory Failure Service and Sleep Disorders breathing Unit. Wendy is a titled APA Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapist and a member of the Australian College of Physiotherapists.

She has a Master of Education and a Master of Health Science completing the sub-specialisation in the Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy Stream. She lectures at the University of Sydney, regularly teaches undergraduate physiotherapy students and teaches on the APA Level 2 ICU Physiotherapy course.

Wendy assists in the education of new graduate physiotherapists with simulation. Her special interests include physiotherapy research in ICU, being the site Principal investigator for multi-centre trials. 

Wendy’s other interests include spending time with her family, houseboating on the Hawkesbury River, and the cinema.

 

Eva Zveglic

Senior Physiotherapist

Eva is the Level 4 Senior Intensive Care Physiotherapist and Weekend Team Leader. Her qualifications include Masters in Advanced Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy, and Bachelor in Applied Science (Physiotherapy).

Eva’s main aspects of her role are teaching and mentoring junior staff and within the multidisciplinary team participating and assisting with research in the ICU setting. She is also responsible for respiratory assessment and treatment of various mechanically ventilated and non-ventilated patients as well as early rehabilitation of acute intensive care patients.

Eva loves coming up with innovative ways of providing early rehabilitation for our clients in intensive care. There is not better feeling than seeing an unmotivated patient go from full bed rest to walking laps of the ward.

Her personal interests include dragging her husband and daughters to different places around the world, trying new foods, running, playing piano and crocheting.

Grace Levy

Senior Physiotherapist

Grace Levy joined the St George ICU team as a Senior Physiotherapist in 2020, following extensive clinical experience working with post operative patients on surgical wards.

As part of the St George ICU Physiotherapy team, she is responsible for the education of physiotherapy students on placement and simulation laboratory training of new graduates.

Other highlights of Grace’s time at St George have included active participation in the multicentre TEAM RCT, and leadership roles through the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on the early mobilisation of ventilated patients and weaning of long-term ventilated patients with tracheostomies.

Outside of work, Grace is enjoying being a first-time mother, and in her spare time can be found outdoors on a paddleboard, swimming, or indulging her inner foodie around Sydney’s restaurants.

 

Belinda Hocking

Senior Social Worker

Belinda is the Critical Care Team Leader for Social Work. Her qualifications include Bachelor of Arts University of New South Wales. Bachelor of Social Work University of Sydney 

Belinda’s role as Senior Social Worker includes Critical Care Team Leader, counselling, family and carer support and advocacy as well as research.

She is passionate about providing compassionate and person-centred care for her patients and families, improving and supporting the mental health and wellbeing of the staff.

Outside of work, Belinda’s interests include sailing, cooking, listening to music, cooking shows and Tik Tok.

Maddie Hayes

Social Worker

Maddie is the Senior Social Worker for ICU and Cardiothoracic Surgery. Her qualifications include Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Social Work University of Sydney

Maddie’s role portfolio includes ICU and cardiothoracic surgery, education and research.

She is passionate about providing person centred care and supporting patients and their families and carers through their ICU journey. Maddie also is interested in research and education on staff well-being and vicarious trauma.

Maddie enjoys reading, cooking and gardening when not at work.

Gloria Ho

Social Worker

Gloria’s qualifications include Bachelor of Arts (International Studies) from RMIT Melbourne and Master of Social Work (Qualifying Program) from University of Sydney. 

Her role includes emotional support, crisis interventions, carer support, psychosocial assessment and discharge planning in ICU.

Gloria is passionate about being able to be with the person who is in crisis and just being a human being with compassion to her patients and colleagues. 

Her personal interests include running, going to the beach and singing. 

 

Suman Adhikari

Senior AMS & Critical Care Pharmacist

Suman Adhikari is highly regarded for his expertise in AMS, particularly in antimicrobial use and AMS outcomes. Suman is member of the Clinical Excellence Commission (CEC) AMS Expert Advisory Group (EAG) and actively contributes to various AMS advisory group across South Eastern Sydney and Illawarra-Shoalhaven health district. He has made significant contributions as a Pharmacy Subject Matter Expert Advisory Group (Pharmacy SMERG) member in the design and development of the statewide electronic Records in Intensive Care (eRIC) system. Furthermore, Suman has played a pivotal role in implementing specific initiatives within St George Hospital ICU, such as the Automated Medication Dispensing Unit (AMDU), electronic register for controlled drugs, creation of drug protocols and participation in medication safety working parties. His research interests encompass the outcomes of antimicrobial in critical care, sepsis, therapeutic drug monitoring and the relationships between antimicrobial prescribing and resistance. Suman is Pharmacist consultant fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Advanced Pharmacy (ANZCAP) in Critical Care and Infectious Disease. He also serves as a conjoint lecturer at St George & Sutherland Clinical School, Faculty of Medicine, The University of New South Wales.

Michelle Cuciti

ICU Pharmacist

Michelle Cuciti enjoys working collaboratively with ICU medical, nursing and other allied health professionals to optimise medication therapy, safety and outcomes for critically ill patients. 

She is passionate about Pharmacy-led medication reconciliation upon admission to ICU and physician communication to reduce unintended discrepancies and improve medication safety for patients.
