Investigator initiated collaborative clinical trials
- REVISE – this randomised clinical trial will determine the effect of stress ulcer prophylaxis on the incidence of clinically important gastrointestinal bleeding and all-cause day 90 mortality
- MEGA-ROX – this randomised clinical trial will test the hypothesis that a conservative approach to oxygen therapy will reduce mortality compared to a liberal approach
- In LOGICAL the hypothesis is that conservative oxygen therapy increases survival with a favourable neurological outcome at 180 days post-randomisation compared to usual (liberal) oxygen therapy
- EPO-TRAUMA – this randomised clinical trial will determine the efficacy of epoetin alfa compared to placebo in reducing mortality and severe disability at 6 months in critically ill trauma patients
- REMAP-CAP – this randomised trial compares the length of interventions in community acquired pneumonia. We are currently contributing to the influenza domain (oseltamivir) and corticosteroid domain (7 days vs shock dependent hydrocortisone):
- STEPCARE is a Medical Research Futures Funded international clinical trial led by Dr Manoj Saxena in Australia, along with international colleagues in New Zealand, Sweden and Finland
In addition, we contribute to several registry studies SPRINT-SARI (COVID-19) and EXCEL (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) and participate in the Point Prevalence Study that is run by the Australia and New Zealand Intensive Care Society Clinical Trials Group and The George Institute for Global Health.
Local studies and early-stage clinical research
- We are collaborating with colleagues at Liverpool Hospital to undertake studies of the coagulation system in sepsis and inflammation.
- One of our physiotherapists is involved in developing a clinical trial evaluating inspiratory muscle training in mechanically ventilated patients.
- One of our senior nurses is developing a project using Natural Language Processing to evaluate pressure injuries.
- One of our research team is involved in the development of novel agent that may have a role in oncology and respiratory illnesses.
